I started eating bison meat from Peterborough Buffalo Farms in Peterborough prior to it closing and wanted to own my own farm so I decided that bison farming was something different than everyone else was doing so I set out to do more research.

I contacted the Canadian Bison Association and found out all I could on handling, raising bison in an ethical natural manner. I took a bison tour with my future wife on our second date and then enquired about purchasing a small starter herd.

I purchased our main bull (Chief) and 5 females to start off with and boarded them with thanks to Rod & Elaine Potter until I could find a suitable farm.

One year later in Apr 2014 I purchased a 170 acre farm in Campbellford, Ontario and started the process of building specialized bison fences to bring the bison home. In Dec 2014 the one paddock was up and we moved the bison in. We had 3 calves born on the farm in 2015.

In the spring of 2015 I was selling meat in Franz's Butcher Shop (Peterborough) and Sharpe's Grocery Store (Campbellford) and farm gate sales at the farm.

In the summer of 2015 I got 2 more paddocks up to do rotational grazing and to have the capability to quarantine any bison I purchase in. In Nov 2015 we bought in more bison from Alberta and we are now up to 17.

We are looking at completing a corral system in the spring of 2016 and we are hoping for up to 7 or 8 calves this spring.

Even though farming is challenging at times I am loving it.
